GREENLAND - “It’s not personal, Sonny, it’s business,”

GREENLAND – It’s not personal or politics – it’s business.

Like the famous line from The Godfather, “It’s not personal, Sonny, it’s business,” this isn’t about Denmark’s intentions but its capabilities. Denmark lacks the military means to defend Greenland on its own, and NATO, in practical terms, cannot secure Europe without the United States.

In total dollars, the U.S. TAXPAYER directly pays about $600–800 million per year into NATO’s shared budgets, but the much larger figure comes from U.S. national defense spending, which is roughly $900–1,000 billion annually and is not paid to NATO itself, yet accounts for about 65–70% of all defense spending by NATO countries combined, reflecting the scale of the U.S. military rather than a direct NATO fee.

Denmark’s direct contribution to NATO’s shared (common) budgets—is about 1.27–1.31% of the total NATO common budgets.

There are roughly 80,000–100,000 U.S. military personnel in Europe when you include both permanently based forces and rotational deployments tied to NATO and deterrence missions.

Bottom line: The U.S. spends tens of billions of dollars each year defending Europe, but direct monetary compensation from European countries is minimal, and most of the “return” is strategic, not financial.

President Trump is simply seeking a guaranteed return for the U.S. TAXPAYER—specifically, rights to Greenland’s rare earth minerals—to offset the cost of that defense to the US TAXPAYER.

In other words, this isn’t personal or political Sonny; it’s just business.

Biblical support for stewardship and wise management:

Luke 14:28–30 – “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough to complete it?” – This illustrates the importance of measuring costs and ensuring resources are wisely invested.

Proverbs 21:5 – “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” – Managing defense spending and securing strategic resources reflects prudent, diligent planning.

Romans 13:4 – “For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason.” – This highlights the responsibility of government to protect and provide for its citizens.
