What Is Our Biblical Responsibility?

America stands at another Fork in the Road.
War and terrorism threaten innocent people. Israel faces enemies committed to attacking it. Iran and Iran-backed armed groups have been central to conflict throughout the Middle East. And once again, much of the world looks toward the United States.
Why America?
Perhaps because no other single democratic nation today combines America's worldwide military reach, economic power, alliances and ability to defend nations far beyond its own borders on the same scale.
That raises a profound question for Christians:
DID GOD ALLOW AMERICA TO BECOME THIS POWERFUL FOR A PURPOSE?
WAS GOD'S HAND ON AMERICA?
America did not emerge in a spiritual vacuum.
The First Great Awakening swept through the colonies before the Revolution, emphasizing faith, conscience and accountability before God.
The Declaration of Independence later proclaimed:
“All men are created equal” and are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.”
Then came the Constitution and Bill of Rights, establishing a government of limited powers while protecting religious liberty, speech and other fundamental freedoms.
Over time, America became powerful enough to help defeat Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, resist Soviet expansion and defend nations threatened by aggression.
Was God's providence involved?
Christians can reasonably believe so.
But that does not mean America is always right.
America is not the Kingdom of God.
Our military is not infallible.
But if God has allowed America to possess extraordinary freedom, wealth and power, Jesus gives us an important principle:
“For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required.”
— Luke 12:48 NKJV
Perhaps America's power is not merely a blessing.
PERHAPS IT IS A RESPONSIBILITY.
CAN A CHRISTIAN SUPPORT WAR?
Jesus said:
“Blessed are the peacemakers.”
— Matthew 5:9 NKJV
Paul wrote:
“If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.”
— Romans 12:18 NKJV
Notice:
“If it is possible.”
Peace requires two willing parties.
What happens when an aggressor refuses peace?
What happens when terrorists murder civilians, take hostages or fire missiles into cities?
What happens when people are targeted simply because they are Jewish, Christian or belong to another hated group?
Scripture says:
“Deliver those who are drawn toward death,
And hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.”
— Proverbs 24:11 NKJV
Sometimes refusing to confront evil does not create peace.
IT LEAVES THE INNOCENT DEFENSELESS.
ISRAEL, IRAN AND THE INNOCENT
Israel has a legitimate responsibility to defend its people from terrorism and military attack.
Christians should unequivocally reject antisemitism and calls for the murder or destruction of Jewish people.
But supporting Israel does not mean declaring every decision of its government righteous.
The Bible itself records God's prophets rebuking Israel when Israel acted unjustly.
The same moral standard applies today.
Likewise, opposing the Iranian government, terrorism or extremist organizations does not justify hatred toward Iranian civilians, Palestinians, Arabs or Muslims.
Jesus commanded:
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
— Matthew 22:39 NKJV
Every innocent human life matters before God.
Therefore our standard must remain:
Protect the innocent. Restrain the aggressor. Protect civilians. Reject revenge. Seek a just peace.
WHEN SHOULD AMERICA FIGHT?
America should never go to war simply because it possesses the power to do so.
Before supporting military action, Christians should ask:
Who is the aggressor?
Are innocent people facing serious danger?
Have realistic peaceful solutions been attempted?
Is military force necessary and proportional?
Are civilians being protected?
What is the objective?
And when that objective is accomplished, will we stop?
Above all:
ARE WE STOPPING EVIL—OR SEEKING REVENGE?
Scripture warns:
“Do not rejoice when your enemy falls.”
— Proverbs 24:17 NKJV
Christian strength is not hatred.
Jesus went even further:
“Love your enemies...and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.”
— Matthew 5:44 NKJV
We can stop someone from killing our neighbor while still praying that our enemy repents.
That is not weakness.
That is Christianity.
IF NOT AMERICA, THEN WHO?
Other nations possess powerful militaries.
Israel is extraordinarily capable within its region. Britain and France possess nuclear weapons and expeditionary forces. European NATO members collectively possess enormous resources. India is a major military power, and China possesses tremendous military strength.
But no other single democratic nation currently combines America's global military reach, alliance network, economic strength and ability to sustain major operations thousands of miles from home on the same scale.
That does not make America morally superior.
IT MAKES AMERICA MORE RESPONSIBLE.
Military power can deter an aggressor.
It can defend an ally.
It can stop an invasion.
It can destroy weapons.
It can rescue people.
It can create conditions in which peace becomes possible.
But there are things America's military cannot do.
It cannot eliminate hatred.
It cannot defeat sin.
It cannot transform the human heart.
And it cannot save the world.
WHAT ABOUT ARMAGEDDON?
The Bible tells us that human history is moving toward a final confrontation.
Revelation speaks of the nations being gathered:
“to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.”
— Revelation 16:14 NKJV
And:
“They gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon.”
— Revelation 16:16 NKJV
With today's wars centered again in the Middle East, Christians naturally wonder:
Are we watching biblical prophecy unfold?
Perhaps today's events will ultimately prove connected to a larger prophetic story.
Perhaps not.
We should remain humble.
Jesus warned:
“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars...but the end is not yet.”
— Matthew 24:6 NKJV
Our responsibility is not to turn every missile into a prophetic timetable.
Nor should Christians encourage war because they believe it will accelerate Armageddon.
GOD FULFILLS PROPHECY.
WE OBEY GOD.
We protect life.
We oppose evil.
We pursue peace.
We share the Gospel.
And we watch.
THE FORK IN THE ROAD
Perhaps God's providence helped raise America from thirteen colonies into a nation capable of defending freedom around the world.
History gives Christians reason to consider that possibility.
But America's strength must always be accompanied by humility.
Micah tells us:
“What does the LORD require of you
But to do justly,
To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God?”
— Micah 6:8 NKJV
Justice. Mercy. Humility.
America may possess extraordinary power to restrain aggression.
But America is not the Savior.
Israel is not the Savior.
Presidents are not the Savior.
Political parties are not the Savior.
Armies are not the Savior.
Military power may defeat an enemy.
But it cannot defeat mankind's greatest enemies:
Sin and death.
WHO WINS IN THE END?
Revelation gives us the answer:
“Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.”
— Revelation 19:11 NKJV
There is the final answer.
Nations will rise.
Nations will fall.
Wars will begin.
Wars will end.
America may defend freedom.
Israel may defend its people.
Armies may defeat aggressors.
But none of them can save mankind.
THE FINAL VICTORY BELONGS TO JESUS CHRIST.
Until that day:
Stand against evil.
Protect innocent life.
Defend freedom.
Reject hatred.
Love your enemies.
Seek justice.
Pursue peace.
Share the Gospel.
And keep your eyes on Jesus Christ.
America may be powerful.
